Anderson Seeks Positive Pomona Pro Stock Results

November 7, 2018 -- A consistent NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series regular season did not lead to Pro Stock Greg Anderson contending for a fifth world championship during the Mello Yello Countdown to the Championship. But the longtime standout still has a chance to end his 2018 campaign on a good note at this weekend’s 54th annual Auto Club NHRA Finals at Auto Club Raceway at Pomona, where Anderson will look for his 13th win at the facility. That would give Anderson the most wins in Pro Stock history at the historic facility, breaking the current tie with the legendary Bob Glidden. It is something that is definitely on Anderson’s mind heading to the season-finale, as is finishing his 2018 season on the best note possible in his Summit Racing Equipment Chevrolet Camaro. “It would mean a lot,” said Anderson, who has 91 career victories. “We’ve struggled in the [...]

IMS Chairman of the Board Emeritus Mari Hulman George Dies at 83

IMS Chairman of the Board Emeritus Mari Hulman George Dies at 83 INDIANAPOLIS, Saturday, Nov. 3, 2018 - Hulman & Company and Indianapolis Motor Speedway Chairman of the Board Emeritus Mari Hulman George, who touched the lives of millions through her deep passion for auto racing, stewardship of the Racing Capital of the World and decades of compassionate philanthropy, died Nov. 3 in Indianapolis with her family by her side. She was 83. Mari served as IMS chairman from 1988-2016, but motorsports and the world-renowned racetrack were among the cornerstones of her life since her father, Anton "Tony" Hulman Jr., purchased the facility in November 1945 and saved it from almost certain demolition after World War II. She was a pioneer as co-owner of a team that raced at the highest levels of Midwestern auto racing, in the 1950s and 1960s, a rarity for a woman at the time. She [...]

Firestone Racing Tires –Way Beyond Round and Black

April 26, 2018 -- By Larry Mason, www, Copyright © 2018 Larry Mason   When you watch an Indy car hurtle down the track at speeds that defy logic whether it’s on a street course, road course, short oval or super speedway, the only thing keeping the car on the  track and off the wall is the driver’s ability to control it on four little contact patches created by Firestone Racing Tires. Yes, physics still apply and in some instances the accident that might occur are out of the driver’s control. At the same time, physics, chemistry and mechanical engineering are also the key ingredients in making a safe, reliable and performance-oriented race tire that can see wide extremes in temperature and loading. I recently sat down with Cara Adams the chief engineer for Bridgestone Americas Motorsports at the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach and asked a few questions. Adams [...]

Truex Jr. Looks Forward to Better Results at Martinsville

Oct. 23, 2018 – Martin Truex Jr. doesn’t sugarcoat his feelings about what the team needs to accomplish in the upcoming three-race Round of 8 playoffs at Martinsville (Va.) Speedway, Texas Motor Speedway in Fort Worth and ISM Raceway in Phoenix. “We just know we have to be better,” said Truex, who advanced to the Round of 8 with a nail-biting eight-point margin in the Round of 12. “Cole (crew chief, Cole Pearn) knows it and Jazzy (engineer Jeff Curtis) knows it. The playoffs haven’t been good to us this year and we’ve really battled a lot of adversity, especially in the second round.” Truex enjoyed a strong first round (Round of 16) finishing third and leading the most laps in the first two races at Las Vegas and Richmond. He was in position to win the third race in Charlotte, but got taken out while in the lead with [...]

Indy Car Tech – The Driver’s Seat

October 10, 2018 By Larry Mason Copyright © 2018 Larry Mason   If you’re sitting down reading this right now, how comfortable is the seat you’re on? How much did it cost? Was it designed exclusively for you? Would it protect you in the event of a sudden deceleration? Chances are, unless you’re sitting in a race car right now with a seat that has been formed around your body, the answers to all of the questions above are “so-so, less than $1,000, No and No.” Most mere mortals get along fine every day in any seat they sit in, however when it comes time to answer the demands of racing an Indy car, only the best will do. Here’s how seats are made and why it’s so important. The process is time consuming, expensive and extremely critical for driver comfort, performance and safety. When the word comfort [...]
